Historical Significance
The Marinids built the magnificent Bou Inania and al-Attarin madrasas in Fez, transforming the city into the intellectual capital of the western Islamic world. They patronized two of history's most influential Muslim intellectuals: Ibn Khaldun (sociology/historiography) and Ibn Battuta (travel/geography). Their era was marked by challenges not only from Christian forces in Iberia but also from the Mongol incursions, which shaped the broader Islamic historical narrative.
