Historical Significance

Algeria's war of independence (1954–1962) against France was the bloodiest and most influential decolonization struggle in the Muslim world, killing 1-1.5 million Algerians and inspiring liberation movements across Africa and Asia. The 1990s civil war between the military-backed state and Islamist insurgents (killing ~200,000) became a cautionary tale about the consequences of canceling Islamist electoral victories and the resulting sectarian conflict, which has had lasting implications for Algerian society. Algeria is Africa's largest country by territory and a major global energy producer.
