Historical Significance

Tunisia is where the Arab Spring began (2010–2011) and was the only country where it produced a functional, if fragile, democracy. The Ennahda movement's willingness to share power with secularists represented a significant experiment in Islamist-democratic participation in the Arab world. However, President Kais Saied's constitutional coup (2021) has reversed these democratic gains, echoing historical struggles for democracy in Tunisia. The earlier history under Bourguiba, which produced the Arab world's most progressive personal status laws, contrasts sharply with the current political climate, raising concerns about the future of democratic governance in the region.
