Historical Significance

The largest state in 19th-century Africa, founded through the Fulani jihad of Uthman dan Fodio, the Sokoto Caliphate created a model of Islamic scholarly governance that drew legitimacy from both religious authority and the support of local communities. This governance model emphasized adherence to Islamic law and scholarship, producing a remarkable corpus of Islamic literature in Arabic, Fulfulde, and Hausa. Its emirs continue to hold enormous social authority in northern Nigeria today.
