Afghan mujahideen commander known as the 'Lion of Panjshir' who became one of the most effective military leaders of the anti-Soviet resistance. A deeply religious figure influenced by both classical Islamic thought and Afghan traditions of resistance, he served as Minister of Defense in the post-Soviet mujahideen government before leading the Northern Alliance against the Taliban from the Panjshir Valley. He operated throughout a brutal multi-sided civil war in which all factions — including his own — were accused of serious abuses. Assassinated by al-Qaeda operatives two days before the September 11 attacks.
