Al-Tabari الطبري

839–923 CE

scholar

Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari produced two monumental works in Islamic scholarship: his Tafsir (Jami' al-Bayan), a foundational commentary on the Quran, and his Tarikh al-Rusul wa al-Muluk, a comprehensive history of the world from creation to 915 CE.

Why They Mattered

His encyclopedic methodology established the template for Islamic historical and exegetical writing. Subsequent tafsir and historical works consistently referenced his pioneering contributions.

Intellectual Role

Al-Tabari was a highly productive scholar of the classical Islamic period. His Tafsir (Jami' al-Bayan an Ta'wil Ay al-Quran) is a verse-by-verse commentary on the entire Quran that collects and evaluates significant interpretations from the first three centuries of Islam. His History (Tarikh al-Rusul wa al-Muluk) narrates events from creation to his own time in 38 volumes. He also founded his own school of Islamic jurisprudence (the Jariri school), which persisted for several centuries.

Legacy

His Tafsir remains an essential reference for all Quranic scholars. His historical methodology — presenting multiple isnad chains for each event — became the standard for Islamic historiography. He is widely regarded as a foundational figure in both Islamic exegesis and Islamic historical writing.
