Hasan ibn Ali الحسن بن علي
624–670 CE
Grandson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through his daughter Fatimah رضي الله عنها and Ali ibn Abi Talib رضي الله عنه. Fifth Rightly-Guided Caliph in some Sunni traditions, and the Second Imam in Shia Islam. After the assassination of his father Ali رضي الله عنه in 661 CE, Hasan رضي الله عنه was acclaimed as caliph in Kufa, but within months he negotiated a peace treaty with Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan رضي الله عنه, ceding political authority in exchange for conditions including safety for the family of Ali رضي الله عنه, no cursing of Ali رضي الله عنه from the pulpits, and that Muawiyah رضي الله عنه would not appoint a successor. This act of political renunciation — praised by some as wisdom and statesmanship that preserved Muslim unity, criticized by others as capitulation — ended the era of the Rashidun Caliphate and inaugurated the Umayyad dynasty. Known for his generosity, eloquence, and dignified restraint, Hasan رضي الله عنه spent his final years in Medina before dying in 670 CE — Shia tradition holds he was poisoned at the instigation of Muawiyah رضي الله عنه.
Why They Mattered
Hasan's abdication represents a consequential political decision in Islamic history. By choosing peace over continued civil war, he preserved the lives of thousands of Muslims and established a precedent for prioritizing communal unity (jama'ah) over individual claim to power. For Shia Muslims, his treaty exemplifies the Imam's willingness to sacrifice worldly authority to protect the community — a model of principled political compromise. For Sunni Muslims, his renunciation fulfilled the Prophetic hadith predicting that 'this grandson of mine is a master, and through him God will reconcile t…
Intellectual Role
While Hasan is less known for formal scholarly works than for his political and spiritual legacy, he was recognized by contemporaries as a figure of deep religious knowledge and notable eloquence. He delivered sermons and khutbas that were recorded and transmitted — his address upon assuming the caliphate and his speech at the time of the treaty with Muawiyah are among the most significant early Islamic political speeches. He was consulted on matters of hadith, fiqh, and Quranic interpretation. Both Sunni and Shia traditions preserve his sayings and aphorisms on governance, piety, and the nat…
Legacy
Hasan رضي الله عنه is remembered as al-Sibt al-Akbar (the Elder Grandson) of the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and as a figure of immense personal dignity, generosity, and wisdom. His decision to make peace rather than wage war for power has been interpreted across centuries as either a form of political wisdom or as a tragic surrender of legitimate authority. In Shia tradition, he is the Second Imam — the link between Ali رضي الله عنه and Husayn رضي الله عنه in the chain of divinely-ap…
