Fifth sultan of Brunei (r. c. 1485–1524 CE) who expanded the Bruneian Empire to its greatest territorial extent, controlling much of Borneo, the Sulu Archipelago, and parts of the Philippines. Under his rule, Brunei became the dominant maritime power in Southeast Asia and a major center of Islam in the Malay world. He maintained extensive trade networks with China, India, and the rest of the Islamic world, and his court was a center of Islamic learning and culture.
