Sultan Zainal Abidin was a ruler of the Aceh Sultanate during its period of peak achievement, following the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda. Known for his administrative reforms and efforts to consolidate the Sultanate’s power, he worked to strengthen Aceh’s position as a regional maritime and trade hub. Under his leadership, Aceh maintained its dominance over key trade routes in the Malacca Strait and continued fostering diplomatic relationships with neighboring regions as well as the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Zainal Abidin also focused on preserving the Islamic character of the sultanate, encouraging Islamic scholarship and supporting the ulema, contributing to Aceh’s reputation as a center of Islamic knowledge and culture in Southeast Asia.
