Ayyubid Walls of Jerusalem
Jerusalem (al-Quds), Palestine / Israel (disputed sovereignty)
The fortified walls of Jerusalem's Old City, rebuilt by the Ayyubids after Saladin's recovery and later by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.
Historical Context
After Saladin recaptured Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187, the Ayyubids restored and modified the city's fortifications. The current walls were built by Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I in the 1530s–40s, largely following the line of earlier Ayyubid and Crusader walls.
