Istanbul's iconic Blue Mosque, named for its more than 20,000 handmade Iznik tiles, and the only Ottoman mosque with six minarets. It faces Hagia Sophia across the Hippodrome of Constantinople.
Historical Context
Sultan Ahmed I, who came to power at age 13, commissioned the mosque despite having no significant military victories to his credit — a departure from the Ottoman tradition of building great mosques to commemorate openings. The mosque's location opposite Hagia Sophia was a deliberate assertion of Islamic architectural confidence.
