Historical Context
Volga Bulgaria emerged in the 7th century as a Turkic state on the middle Volga River. In 922 CE, the Bulgar ruler Almış sent an embassy to the Abbasid Caliph al-Muqtadir requesting religious scholars, and the caliph dispatched a delegation led by Ahmad ibn Fadlan, whose travelogue (Risala) provides one of the most detailed accounts of northern peoples in the pre-modern Islamic world. Ibn Fadlan recorded the formal acceptance of Islam by the Bulgar court — making Volga Bulgaria one of the earliest Muslim polities north of the Caucasus.
