One of the largest mosques in Europe, designed by the Cologne architect Paul Böhm in a contemporary style with a transparent glass facade. Operated by the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DİTİB).

Historical Context

Germany's Turkish Muslim community — numbering approximately three million — is the result of guest worker (Gastarbeiter) agreements between West Germany and Turkey beginning in 1961. For decades, Turkish Muslims worshipped in converted factory halls and backroom prayer spaces. The Cologne Central Mosque, initiated by DİTİB in 2007 and completed in 2018, was designed to provide a purpose-built center of worship and community life.
