Derbent (Arabic: Bab al-Abwab, 'Gate of Gates') was conquered by the Arab armies during the early Islamic expansion in the 7th–8th centuries CE. The Juma Mosque was established in the 8th century, making it the oldest confirmed mosque in Russia and one of the oldest extant mosques in the world.
