Historical Context
The mosque traces its origins to small prayer rooms established for Muslim sailors (lascars) and merchants in London's East End in the late 19th century. A formal trust was established in 1910, making it one of the earliest organized Muslim institutions in the United Kingdom. The first dedicated mosque building opened in 1941 during the Blitz, a remarkable act of community faith in wartime. The current building, designed in a restrained modernist Islamic style with a prominent minaret, was completed in 1985 on Whitechapel Road.
