One of the largest mosques in Africa, named after the 19th-century resistance leader Emir Abdelkader who fought French colonialism. It houses a university and Islamic research center.
Historical Context
Emir Abdelkader led a 17-year resistance against French colonial invasion. After exile, he became known as a humanitarian who protected Christians during the 1860 massacres in Damascus.
