The short-lived Mughal capital built by Emperor Akbar, abandoned after only 14 years due to water scarcity. Its remarkable preservation makes it one of the best examples of Mughal urban planning and architecture.

Historical Context

Akbar built the city to honor the Sufi saint Salim Chishti, who had predicted the birth of Akbar's heir. The Buland Darwaza (Gate of Magnificence) was added to commemorate Akbar's incorporation of Gujarat. The city was abandoned around 1585 when the court moved to Lahore.
