The Great Mosque of Aleppo, originally founded during the Umayyad period, with its famous minaret destroyed during the Syrian Civil War in 2013.
Historical Context
The mosque was founded by al-Walid I but underwent major reconstruction under the Zengid ruler Nur al-Din and later the Ayyubids. The site reportedly contains the remains of Zechariah, father of John the Baptist.
