The first mosque built in Granada since the end of the Nasrid Emirate in 1492, located in the Albaicín quarter overlooking the Alhambra. It symbolizes the return of Islamic worship to Andalusia after more than five centuries.

Historical Context

The project to build a mosque in Granada was initiated in the 1980s by a community of Spanish Muslim converts and immigrants. After years of legal and political obstacles — including opposition from local residents and the Catholic Church — the mosque was finally completed and inaugurated in 2003. It was designed by a Spanish Muslim architect in the Andalusian style, featuring a courtyard garden with a central fountain (inspired by the Nasrid tradition), carved stucco, and geometric tilework crafted by artisans from Morocco.
