Historical Context

Originally an Abbasid-era mosque, the building was dramatically transformed under the Seljuks in the 11th century. The rival viziers Nizam al-Mulk and Taj al-Mulk each built a domed chamber, competing to create the most perfect structural expression. Later additions by the Safavids and Qajars further enriched the complex.
