Great Mosque of Sana'a

One of the oldest mosques in the Islamic world, reportedly founded on the direct instruction of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Its ancient manuscripts — including some of the earliest known Quranic fragments — make it one of the most historically significant Islamic religious sites.
Historical Context
The mosque was originally constructed during the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ lifetime, reportedly incorporating stones from the pre-Islamic Ghumdan Palace. It was significantly expanded under the Umayyad caliph al-Walid I (r. 705–715 CE), who added a minaret and expanded the prayer hall. Successive Yemeni, Ayyubid, Rasulid, and Ottoman rulers further enlarged and embellished the complex. The 1972 discovery of Quranic manuscripts during restoration work revealed parchment fragments that are among the oldest surviving Quranic texts — predating the standardized Uthmanic codex and providing invaluable evidence for the history of Quranic compilation.
