Historical Context

The cemetery has been in continuous use since the earliest days of Islam. In 1806 and again in 1925, the structures and domes over the graves were demolished by Wahhabi forces, an act that remains deeply controversial among Muslims worldwide, particularly Shia Muslims who venerate the Ahl al-Bayt buried there.
