Khirbat al-Mafjar
Jericho, Palestine / Israel (disputed sovereignty)
An Umayyad desert palace near Jericho featuring extraordinary mosaic floors, carved stucco, and a massive bathhouse — one of the finest examples of Umayyad secular architecture.
Historical Context
The complex was never completed, possibly due to the end of the Umayyad dynasty in 750 CE. An earthquake also contributed to its destruction. Archaeological excavation has revealed an extraordinarily lavish complex with audience halls, a mosque, and an elaborate bath.
