Al-Masjid al-Haram
Mecca, Saudi Arabia
The holiest site in Islam, containing the Ka'ba — the qibla toward which all Muslims pray and the focal point of the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Historical Context
The Ka'ba existed as a sanctuary in pre-Islamic Arabia, serving as a center of pilgrimage and trade. With the advent of Islam, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ cleansed the Ka'ba of idols upon the Opening of Mecca (630 CE) and re-consecrated it as the house of monotheistic worship. Successive Islamic polities — Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluk, Ottoman, and Saudi — have expanded and renovated the mosque, each leaving architectural imprints that reflect their era's capacities and priorities.
