The mosque built by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in Medina, housing his tomb and serving as the second holiest mosque in Islam.

Historical Context

Upon emigrating to Medina in 622 CE (the Hijra), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ personally participated in the construction of the mosque adjacent to his home. It was a simple structure of palm trunks and mud brick. Over the following centuries, it was expanded by the Umayyads (particularly al-Walid I's monumental reconstruction), the Abbasids, the Mamluks, the Ottomans, and most recently the Saudi government, which has massively enlarged the complex to accommodate millions of visitors.
