The historic center of Tunis, one of the best-preserved pre-modern Islamic cities in North Africa. It flourished under the Hafsid dynasty as the capital of a major North African sultanate.

Historical Context

Under the Hafsid dynasty (1229–1574), Tunis became one of the wealthiest and most cosmopolitan cities in the western Mediterranean. The medina attracted scholars, merchants, and refugees from Andalusia after the Reconquista.
