A monumental Mamluk complex on al-Muizz Street combining a madrasa, a mausoleum, and a bimaristan (hospital), built in just 13 months — a testament to the organizational power of the Mamluk state.

Historical Context

Sultan Qalawun built the complex on the site of a Fatimid palace. Its mausoleum is the most architecturally ambitious of the three elements, with a soaring dome and elaborate marble, mosaic, and stucco decoration inspired by both Crusader Gothic and Islamic traditions.
