The massive red sandstone fortress that served as the primary residence of the Mughal emperors for nearly 200 years. The Indian Prime Minister raises the national flag here every Independence Day.
Historical Context
Shah Jahan moved the Mughal capital from Agra to Delhi and built the Red Fort as the palace of his new city, Shahjahanabad. The fort remained the seat of Mughal power until the British deposed the last emperor in 1857.
