The largest surviving mosque from the Bengal Sultanate period, featuring 77 domes (despite its name). A UNESCO World Heritage Site and the finest example of the distinctive brick-built Islamic architecture of Bengal.
Historical Context
Built by Khan Jahan Ali, a saint-governor who brought Islamic civilization to the swampy frontiers of southern Bengal. The city he founded, Khalifatabad (now Bagerhat), contained dozens of mosques, madrasas, and public buildings.
