Timbuktu Manuscript Libraries and Mosques
Timbuktu, Mali
A legendary center of West African Islamic scholarship, home to the University of Sankore and hundreds of thousands of manuscripts covering theology, law, astronomy, medicine, and history.
Historical Context
Timbuktu was founded as a seasonal camp by Tuareg nomads around the 12th century and grew into a major commercial hub under the Mali Empire. Its golden age came under the Songhai Empire (particularly during the reign of Askia Muhammad, r. 1493–1528), when the city's scholars commanded respect across the Islamic world. The Moroccan invasion of 1591 disrupted its scholarly networks, and successive centuries of political instability reduced its prominence. In 2012, Ansar Dine militants occupied the city and destroyed several mausoleums and damaged manuscripts — an act of cultural destruction condemned worldwide.
