Historical Context
Mehmed II built the palace shortly after opening Constantinople. Unlike the monolithic palaces of European monarchs, Topkapi was designed as a series of pavilions, courtyards, and gardens — reflecting Ottoman (and Central Asian) traditions of court architecture.
