Ukhaidir Fortress
Karbala Governorate, Iraq
A massive Abbasid-era fortress in the Iraqi desert, one of the best-preserved examples of early Islamic military and palatial architecture.
Historical Context
The fortress is attributed to Isa ibn Musa, a nephew of the first two Abbasid caliphs. Its remote desert location may reflect political exile or a desire for a secure private retreat away from the capital.
